The history of the Medical Taping Concept

In the late nineties footballer Alfred Nijhuis (MSV Duisburg, Urawa Red Diamonds-Japan, Borussia Dortmund) introduced a Japanese treatment method (Kinesio Taping) in Europe. During his football career in Japan he had experienced the spectacular effects personally, but after having returned to the Netherlands he found that there the method was completely unknown. Together with Gert-Jan Olthoff, Alfred Nijhuis founded the company FysioTape BV, with the objective to introduce this method in Europe.

In the first few years we were confronted with a great deal of scepticism, but by organising many courses and seminars we managed to convince many people of the benefits of the method and since than the method has only extended. This has resulted in the Medical Taping Concept as it is today. At the moment there are hundreds of physicians, physiotherapists, sports masseurs and skin therapists working with this concept. In the Netherlands we co-operate successfully with professional associations.

In an increasing number of European countries MTC is regarded as a very effective method of treating various physical symptoms. In The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium the concept has existed for years, but now also MTC courses are being given in almost every European country.

The interesting thing about this is that the concept gets a more and more international character and the input we get from those countries is very useful for the further development of the concept. The Medical Taping Concept is still being developed further (and will remain doing so) because our MTC instructors from various countries keep discovering new techniques.

These new developments are being discussed and tested extensively by several MTC instructors and, in case these new techniques appear to be effective, they are included in the course material. In this way the course material always remains ‘up-to-date’.
